Nikolai Rubinov (alias), born in 1998, is a multidisciplinary video artist and a graphic designer from Helsinki. He graduated from master’s program of Visual Communication Design (Aalto-University, ARTS) in May of 2025. He uses a diversity of techniques in his production variating from hand drawn frame by frame animations to digitally generated complex moving graphics. His main work tools are moving graphic editor software and lately he has been getting into TouchDesigner and JWildfire. He started in video art as a VJ (Visual Jockey) in the night club scene when he was 18-years old and is a practicing VJ till this day, performing by artist name VJ Moody Bitch, both in night club scene and at music concerts and festivals. As a concert VJ, he has been working with Finnish artists, such as – Ibe, Malla and Yeboyah. Currently he is actively working with Helsinki based hyperpop artist Efka Crush. Nikolai works intensively together with the artists and/or their ADs on the visions for the concert visuals. As in venues, he has performed at clubs such as – Kaiku Complex, 6-Linja, Ääniwalli and underground venues. In terms of festivals – Sideways, Flow and Norberg-festival. In February of 2025 he performed alongside with incredible musician and artist Lixagon at “KTK” i.e. Kotimaan Teknokatsaus or in English – Domestic Techno Spectre. This performance, in retrospective, gained him some visibility.
Nikolai has a background in classical piano and music theory since age of 5. He practiced and played piano as his first instrument at Helsinki’s Conservatory until he was 16 years old. Continuing his musical path, he picked up guitar and producing with DAW with the help of internet tutorials and his peers. Nowadays Nikolai experiments with different genres and sounds, mixing ambient guitar sounds and prolonged reverbs. He also has a dungeon synth side project called Raivo Rotta.
Nikolai aims to stretch the limits of art platforms and is experimenting with adapting his art onto the environment’s provided possibilities. In terms of content Nikolai wants to deep dive into endless possibilities of what our so chaotic yet mesmerizing universe can provide in terms of inspiration. He creates immersive fractal structure animations and plain two-colored roughly hand drawn sketches and everything in between. Cosmic and dark, but don’t be afraid, he is not that mysterious, nor does he bite.
